Seraphinite, also known as Serafine and Serafinite, is an extremely rare gem variety of Clinochlore, a hydrous magnesium iron aluminum silicate. Often called green chlorite, it’s typically a deep forest green with silvery, feather-like additions of mica.
Seraphinite with Chatoyancy
It can be seen in mass formation as well as botryoidal, with the crystal system being Monoclinic (unequal sides). When polished, the gem displays a pearly to vitreous luster. It’s usually found with high flash chatoyancy in raw form and becomes incredibly shiny when polished.
Origin and Discovery
Seraphinite has only one known locality in the entire world, being the Korshunovskoye Iron deposit in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. Russian mineralogist Nikolay Koksharov discovered this mineral and it's believed that he named it after the group of angels in the Bible known as the “Seraphim”. Estimated to be approximately 20-25 million years old, Lake Baikal is the oldest existing freshwater lake in the world.

In 1851, seraphinite specimens were found in West Chester, Pennsylvania. While other countries, including Europe, have also identified seraphinite, the primary deposits remain near Lake Baikal.

Seraphinite is usually a dark, forest green color closely resembling emerald. Rarely, it can appear in variations of red, yellow, gold, or black. It’s typically opaque with areas of translucence, which allows for light to refract beautifully through the silvery, feather-like mica inclusions.
