Sai Baba, revered as a spiritual teacher, Sadguru, monk, and Baba, spent much of his life in Shirdi, a small town in Maharashtra. Despite the mystery surrounding his birth and religious background, his teachings and blessings continue to inspire devotees worldwide. He left his physical body in 1918.
The Essence of Sai's Teachings
The stories, parables, and teachings of Sai Baba are wonderful. They bestow knowledge and wisdom in both worldly and spiritual domains, giving peace and happiness to those afflicted with sorrows and miseries. The spiritual essence contained in religious scriptures like Vedas, Geeta, and Yoga Vashisht is found in the life-story of Shri Sainath.
The concepts on God and spirituality are explained in a simple yet comprehensive manner in ‘Shri Sai Satcharitra,’ making additional books or commentaries unnecessary. It has a natural flow that makes readers feel closely associated with its events. The foremost duty of a Sai devotee is, therefore, to read ‘Shri Sai Satcharitra’ and absorb it by heart if possible.
The Power of Mantras
There are several Sai Baba mantras to reduce difficulties in a person's life. Each mantra has a specific meaning and a specific reason to chant. These mantras are very effective, and people have faith in them. These mantras have great powers to cure things. Learning about the benefits of reciting any mantra is a good habit as it motivates us to recite these mantras even when we are depressed or upset.
Sai Baba Ashtothram
During my early days as a Sai devotee, I used to regularly read this 108 holy names of Saibaba from a little book. Saint Shirdi Sai Baba never desired or encouraged any kind of formal pooja done to him during most of his lifetime in Shirdi. Gradually, Saibaba’s Aarti was sung by devotees sitting in Dwarakamai. Even these Aarti’s are about other ancient saints like Tukaram, Jnanadev etc and not directed on Saibaba. Sai seemed to love it when any ancient Guru or Saint is praised.

A Personal Experience
In 2001, my sister faced challenges while pursuing her Ph.D. in Germany. Despite initial happiness, she encountered racism and discouragement. Thousands of miles away, I sat in the Shirdi Saibaba temple in Mylapore, Chennai, reciting the 108 names of Saibaba, praying for her protection. Thankfully, by Sai's grace, she found a new university and completed her Ph.D. in 2005.

On December 24, 1977, Pandit Sri Ghandikota Subrahmanya Shastry announced Sri Sathya Sai Gayatri in the presence of Sai Baba. This Gayatri Mantra, like other Gayatris, is on par with Veda Mantra. It has 24 letters and consists of three lines, each with 8 letters. Such a composition has unique properties. According to Maharshi Vararuchi, the numerology of all letters adds up to 108, which is why recitation is done 108 times.
