Wii U Compatible Games List: Enjoying Your Favorite Games

The Wii U is Nintendo's sixth home video game console. Like all video game consoles, the Wii U uses a console and a controller to manipulate an image on a television screen. The Wii U's unique feature is that its controller, the Wii U GamePad, has its own built-in screen for displaying images. This allows for innovative gameplay experiences, including Off-TV Play and enhanced multiplayer options. This article provides a detailed overview of Wii U compatibility, Off-TV Play, and the use of Wii accessories.

Wii U Console and Gamepad

Off-TV Play: Gaming Without the Television

Off-TV Play is a feature of Nintendo's eighth-generation video game console, the Wii U. It can display an entirely different image, or duplicate the television screen into the Wii U GamePad. It also allowed for 2-Player multiplayer, where each person would have their own screen with no need for Co-op splitscreen. Off-TV Play is the term used for when an entire game is played strictly on the controller, without the use of a television.

The GamePad also features two speakers that can be used for Off-TV Play. For supported games, a television isn't required to be connected to the Wii U; the Wii U can operate in Off-TV Play mode as long as the console is connected to a power source. However, as the processing is done on the console, and transmitted to the GamePad, the user must still keep within the transmitting range for it to work.

Not all games support Off-TV Play, as some games conceptually rely on the asymmetric interplay between the television screen and the Wii U GamePad screen, such as Nintendo Land and ZombiU. However, all Wii U Virtual Console titles purchased from the Nintendo eShop include the option to use Off-TV Play.

Original Wii games and Wii Virtual Console games were not initially compatible either, although this was changed in the Wii U's September 30, 2013 system update, which allows it, but only through the use of original Wii peripherals as input methods, meaning that the image would appear on Wii U GamePad screen, but its buttons would not work, requiring the use of Wii Remotes and Wii accessories for button and joystick input. This was partially revised again in January 2015; when Nintendo began releasing Wii games digitally on the Wii U eShop.

Backwards Compatibility with Wii Games and Accessories

Wii U is backwards compatible with almost all Wii games and accessories, so you'll be able to continue enjoying your favourite Wii experiences on Wii U.

Playing Wii Games via Wii Mode

While it's not possible to play Wii U games on Wii, you can continue to enjoy Wii software on Wii U! Nearly all Wii games can be enjoyed on our newest home console, so there’s no need to shut your favourite games in the cupboard. Enter Wii Mode from the Wii U Menu to enjoy all kinds of Wii software - you can play Wii Game Discs, WiiWare and Virtual Console titles from Wii, or download Wii software (such as WiiWare and Virtual Console titles) from the Wii Shop Channel.

Please note: This feature allows Wii software to be displayed on the Wii U GamePad screen; Wii software being displayed cannot be controlled with the Wii U GamePad. To play Wii software, a Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus and/or other accessories may be required. Please check the game's instruction manual for more information.

Using Wii Accessories

Loads of Wii accessories and peripherals can be used with Wii U too - depending on the game you're playing you can still use your Wii Remotes, Wii Remote Plus controllers, Wii MotionPlus and Nunchuk accessories, the Sensor Bar from your Wii, the Wii Balance Board and many others!

Transferring Your Wii Data

Performing a system transfer lets you move a variety of data from Wii to Wii U, including save data, Wii Shop Channel purchase history and current balance of Wii Points, Mii characters stored in Mii Plaza, Virtual Console titles, WiiWare, and more! The transfer process is very simple and you can find details on which data can be transferred, as well as full instructions on how to carry out a system transfer, at our Wii to Wii U System Transfer Support pages.

As the purported definitive version of the game, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is remastered and presented in 1080p graphics. Gamers can experience high-definition cell-shaded presentation on their TVs or entirely on the Wii U GamePad controller. The streamlined interface lets gamers easily manage your inventory-simply slide an item onto any button. Instantly view maps and zoom in on the GamePad controller's touch screen.

Enjoy a breezy cruise with the original sail, or switch to the brand-new Swift Sail that lets you gather the wind and speed across the waves. With the new Tingle Bottle feature, you can connect with others over Miiverse. Comments or screenshots others have posted on Miiverse may wash up on the shore or appear in other locations, tucked into bottles. Whenever you want, move around the world in first-person mode, using the GamePad gyroscope to look around you and aim your bow, hookshot, Picto Box, or telescope. You can store more pictographs with your improved Picto Box-handy for creating figurines-and share them with other players on Miiverse.

Your pictures, game tips, and messages may also appear in another player's game. Take the adventure to new levels with Hero Mode, available from the moment you start the game. In this mode, you only regain health when you earn a new heart piece or container, use a red potion, or visit a fairy fountain. Also, your enemies do double the damage.
