The Healing Power of Chakra Songs: Benefits for Mind, Body, and Spirit

Music is one of the most powerful stimulators of emotion. We all have that one piece that makes us cry, or a song that we can’t help but dance to. However, some people believe that music and sound have a profound effect on their physical and spiritual well-being as well.

Chakra Healing

It’s long been understood that sound frequencies have a major impact on our health and general well-being. Different sound frequencies have specific effects on our emotions and body.

Understanding Chakras and Their Frequencies

To get a better understanding of how these frequencies work, we first need an understanding of the seven chakras. Chakras are an energy system that runs through the body with seven main points along the spine. Mentions of chakras date back to India, between 1500 to 1000 BCE. These points, sometimes referred to as wheels, are spinning disks of energy that stay “open.” Blockages in a chakra cause a myriad of physical and spiritual problems.

According to the belief in chakras, each chakra has its own frequency, meaning it’s possible to work on each chakra and balance them using specific music or sounds. Each vibration makes our chakra more rooted and helps us rebalance our energies. Chakras are defined as our energy centers from which the energy moves. It is believed that when our chakras are balanced, we feel in harmony and in peace. Healing music can be used to help us rebalance our chakras.

Healing tones, also referred to as solfeggio frequencies, are seven frequencies that correspond with the seven chakras in the body. They are often used during sound baths with Tibetan singing bowls, and each frequency is associated with its corresponding chakra, offering specific benefits. Similarly, musical keys are also said to evoke certain feelings.

Here's a breakdown of each chakra and its corresponding frequency:

Solar Plexus ChakraAbove the navel528Personal power, confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline

Throat ChakraOver the voice box741Communication
Third Eye ChakraMiddle of the forehead852Intuition, spiritual sight, deep relaxation
Crown ChakraCrown of the head963Consciousness, enlightenment, mental clarity

The Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is linked to grounding, safety, and emotional security. When blocked, it can cause feelings of insecurity in our basic needs and our well-being. The root chakra is stimulated by the lowest solfeggio frequency, 396 Hz.

The Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is below the navel and is stimulated by the frequency of 417 Hz. We link this energy point to creativity, pleasure, and sexuality. It also has deep ties with our emotional expression. A blockage here can manifest feelings of social insecurity, as well as illnesses within the urinary tract and lower back.

The Solar Plexus Chakra

Situated above the navel, the solar plexus chakra represents our personal power. When open, it is the seat of confidence, self-esteem, and self-discipline. This chakra determines how we move through the world and our ability to assert ourselves. When blocked, digestive issues are often the resulting consequence. To help unblock the chakra, listen to the frequency of 528 Hz while doing activities that foster discipline.

The Heart Chakra

As the name suggests, the fourth chakra is over the heart. This energy point is all about finding peace, compassion, and forgiveness. When blocked, diseases of the heart and asthma can manifest. But, most often, people with a blocked heart chakra are likely to be people pleasers and put the needs of others before their own.

The Throat Chakra

The throat chakra is located over the voice box and relates to the frequency of 741 Hz. You’d be right in assuming this chakra is heavily involved with our ability to communicate. Blockages can lead to behaviors such as lying, gossiping, and miscommunication. Chanting, singing, and other vocalizations stimulate the point and allow energy to flow.

The Third Eye Chakra

The third eye is the source of our intuition and spiritual sight. Linked with the frequency of 852 Hz, this tone balances the energy in the middle of the forehead. The benefits are deep relaxation and increased perception. To boost the flow of energy, listen to 852 Hz while practicing meditation or visualization.

The Crown Chakra

The final of the seven chakras is the crown chakra. This energy point is at the crown of the head and connects to our highest form of consciousness. Many consider it the chakra of enlightenment. To stimulate this point, deep reflection and honesty are required. The most powerful tone, 963 Hz, helps with feelings of well-being, mental clarity, and a positive outlook on life.

The Science of Sound Healing

There are two properties of vibration which determine a sound: the amplitude, which is the size of the vibration and determines how loud a sound is, and the frequency, which is the speed of the vibration and is measured in Hertz (Hz). Each chakra is associated with a specific frequency, and by visualizing the color of the chakra - and listening to sounds scaled to that specific frequency of the chakra - we can rebalance our emotions. In addition, Binaural beats, which imply two auditory illusions of the same frequency, can have an impact on our mental wellbeing and regulate our mood. This form of sound therapy has gained popularity over the past few years and can help relieve anxiety.

Sound Healing

Binaural beats playing at a specific frequency can have specific effects; for example, delta patterns which range from 0.5-4 Hz can improve sleep and reduce insomnia, while Theta pattern ranging from 4 to 7 Hz can boost creativity and concentration. Alpha patterns from 7-13 Hz can help you to relax while Beta patterns from 13-30 Hz may improve alertness and reduce anxiety. Gemma patterns of 30-50 Hz can maintain arousal and ease some symptoms of depression.

Sound Healing and Therapy Explained

Some sounds have the ability to raise our vibrations, and even to ease symptoms of anxiety and stress. Sound healing has been practiced across the globe and is an ancient meditation technique that relies on various instruments to create vibrational states, taking us to unknown territories. In Aboriginal culture, sound healing has been practiced for over 40,000 years, but it also has ancient roots in other parts of the world, too. Using Tibetan bowls or gongs tuned to a specific frequency can ease the symptoms of several conditions. Some instruments are believed to have impressive healing powers, such as singing bowls, harp, pan flute, and drums.

Sound Healing Tools

As with many mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation, sound healing is very popular these days, as our daily lives become busy and stressful.

Music Meditation: How to Get Started

Now that we know how sound vibrations work on our mind and body, we may want to indulge in states of deep relaxation. Yet, during these uncertain times, it’s difficult to attend sound healing sessions such as a gong bath or Tibetan bowls. Yet, we do have access to a great deal of ambient healing music that can be listened to to relax - and to find balance within ourselves. As we let the music take over our mind and soul, our body relaxes and our mind stops wandering. Meditating to music is one of the best ways to discover our inner ability to survive and glow, from the inside out.

To practice, first find a comfortable, silent place, sit comfortably on the floor and play some background music to relax. When you close our eyes, you can envision a forest, a mountain, the sea, or the ocean, and feel the vibrations of the sound slowly entering your ears. Once you enter a state of deep relaxation, you can continue the beautiful journey by visualizing something positive, warm, and enchanting, such as a poetic landscape. Take a deep breath in and out, and repeat it as you listen to the music you love.

Another technique consists of listening to some music meditation podcasts. You can set up an intention before the practice, for instance, “Today, I want to feel love,” and let the vibrations of the sound guide you through the time you have set for yourself. Listening to background music including sounds of nature, binaural beats, or ambient music makes you feel grounded, more energetic, and relaxed. As you listen to the beauty of the sounds, you may notice a tingling sensation, a normal physical reaction, and may feel the anxiety or stress gradually leaving our body.
