If you’re looking for a more complete costume, you may want to sew or purchase the rest.

Finally, I wanted to point out that while I did research which stones went where, there are many differences of opinion as to the exact translation of each. So you may find that some of the pieces aren’t the same as what you previously heard or thought you knew. We’re probably both right.

DIY Gemstones for the Breast Plate

  1. I first outlined the shapes and sizes of each gem.
  2. I drew the facets using varying shades, adding more facets to some, and leaving some unfaceted.
  3. I added highlights using the pen.
  4. Paint with gold paint.
  5. Do a second coat if you need it after the first has dried.
  6. Cut out your gems and lay them out.
  7. Tie your ribbon around the two top loops and trim to size.
  8. Write “Kodesh La’Hashem” on the gold bit if you want. I used puffy paint.
  9. Staple on another ring arching over the top of your child’s head. This will go from the front of his head to the back.
  10. Glue or staple on the “gold plate” that you created in the center.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that your kohen gadol costume came out fantastic!

Voodoo Queens and Their Significance

Voodoo Queens, also called Voodoo Priestesses, became a prominent part of Louisiana Voodoo during the 1800s. Voodoo Queens were all powerful figureheads overseeing the sacred rituals and ceremonies.

Key terms in Voodoo:

  • Gris-gris: An appeal to the spirits in the form of talisman or amulet used to bring good luck, love, power or protection. A voodoo doll is one type of gris-gris. Another is a leather pouch inscribed with verses from the Qur’an. This pouch contains 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 or 13 objects specifically chosen chosen for the wearer and for a specific purpose. During the time of slavery voodoo talismans were feared and associated with black magic and evil.
  • Mojo: Although the term ‘mojo’ is commonly used to refer to sex appeal in pop culture, it actually is a synonym for gris-gris.
  • Li Grand Zombi: A serpent spirit frequently summoned in Louisiana Voodoo.

Star Wars Force Priestesses Costume

Create a unique Star Wars-inspired costume with the Force Priestesses from The Clone Wars. If things go well, I may modify the file to fit the other four aspects (Priestess group at Dragoncon anyone? Since the Serene mask is symetrical, I just Pep'd and cut out half, then cut two of everything.

I cut out all of the pep pieces and removed the flaps, transferring the pattern to craft foam and a single layer of Worbla, so I could glue everything together then hit it all with a heatgun and shape it the way I want. It's not quite done yet, but foam and Worbla have helped me form smoother curves a lot quicker than if I were to glue paper together and coat it a whole bunch.

Long term, I think i need to start looking in to suitable patterns to use as a base. Offhand, choir gowns come to mind, but I would like to keep the pleating to a minimum - probably just the two along the front and two along the back.

I'll also need to work on a lightweight cowl - I was thinking of foam on the neck (for flexibility) and covered Kobracast for the head (for breathability and shape)? Not sure about the stole. Perhaps just fabric?

I was also thinking about makeup on my hands and ways of making the feet work out; they basically have bare feet, but with two giant toes, and the concept art shows they are predominantly standing on their toes, so I was thinking some sort of high heel setup?
