POPStarter Compatibility List: A Detailed Guide for PSP Users

POPS is the component of the firmware that emulates PS1 games. In essence, it's an official PS1 emulator for the PSP from Sony itself. Without it, you cannot run the converted POPS eboots.

For those running custom firmware and converting PS1 games to ISO and then to EBOOT format, here's a compatibility list to help you get the best experience.

PSP Console

Important Note: Generally speaking, if a game has CD audio tracks, it will likely hang if you don't make the EBOOT with CDDA. Some will work without the CD audio tracks, but you just won't get BGM. Ripping as ISO, then converting, is the leading cause of losing CDDA.

Here's a list of games and their compatibility status:

  • Doom [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Final Doom [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Jumping Flash! [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Loaded [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Rayman 1 [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Ridge Racer 1 [NTSC-Jap]: Works fine with all pops.
  • Tomb Raider 1 [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops with CDDA.
  • Tomba! 1 [NTSC-US]: Works fine with 3.10+ pops.
  • Twisted Metal 1 [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops.
  • Twisted Metal 2 [NTSC-US]: Works fine with all pops.

I may have missed one or two in there that need CDDA.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • If you encounter issues with multi-disc games, ensure the Game ID of the second disc is the same as the one used in the first.

Additional Notes:

An example of what I've seen - the NTSC-US version of Ridge Racer 1 doesn't work as a straight rip - you have to rip the files off the ISO, add a big dummy file, then reconstruct the disc image. At least, that was the way it was for 3.02/3.03. I haven't seen any posts about it and 3.10.

With the 3.30 decrypter out now, anyone try 3.30 POPS? It should theoretically be possible. I don't know if Popsloader will notice it, even though it says "and future pops" in the readme. But you can still take the 3.30 pops files and flash those into 3.10 OE-A. (BACK-UP FIRST!) Doing so will either work, or break Pops. It'd be an awesome customization to 3.10 OE-A until 3.30 OE-A is out, since you can place the 3.10 pops on the memorystick for popsloader.
