Astrology is an incredibly complicated field of study to understand and my grasp is very much that of a beginner but I think it's fun to explore and play! In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into the world of relocation astrology, also known as astrocartography, and explain how you can use it to discover the places where you can thrive.

What is Astrocartography?

Astrocartography is a discipline of Astrology (it's also known as Relocation Astrology) where your birth chart, which can predict a surprising amount of information about the direction and events of your life as well as your personality, is mapped against the world map.

Lines are drawn on top of a map of the world and places that fall on lines or line intersections are supposed to be more meaningful, powerful, transformative for you. Depending on which line/s fall on the city/place, a place can be very supportive for you, helping you to succeed in an area of your life e.g. your Chiron line is related to addressing your 'wounds' that need healing or your personal gifts/magic (the two are often interlinked) that enhance personal wholeness.

Astrologer Lisa Stardust states,” Astrocartography is a tool that can transcend your journey or move with specific energy.” An astrocartographer uses your birth chart to create a map of the globe with lines crisscrossing countries. Each line has a planetary symbol assigned, such as the Sun for vitality and self-expression or the Moon for emotions and intuition, symbolizing different facets of your life and personality. These lines can indicate if the location is favorable or not.

Many people use astrocartography to plan moves or brainstorm vacations and travel. Depending on the planetary line, you can shift your energy, start over, find new love, or experience emotional transformation. For example, Hawaii falls on my “Moon line,” which indicates an emotional connection and the possibility of deep change.

How to Get Started with Astrocartography

It’s wise to have a goal in mind before you begin. For example, are you looking to move to a place that might enhance your career? Or are you planning a romantic vacation? This way, you can focus on the line that will help you manifest your desires.

Next, you need an astrocartography map. You can use a free site such as astro.com or astro-seek.com. Some software programs, such as TimePassages, offer astrocartography features (look under Display and click on AstroMaps).

Gather the birth information you’ll need: birth date, birth city, and birth time (you may need your birth certificate if you can’t ask your parents).

How to Read an Astrocartography Map

Once you have your relocation chart, it’s time to interpret it! At first, it may look confusing. All those lines! But rest assured, it’s not as complicated as you think!

First, simply focus on the very top of the map. Across the top row, notice that there are planetary symbols, including Venus, Saturn, Pluto, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Mercury, and Jupiter-as well as the Sun and the Moon.

In the second row, beneath the planet symbols, you’ll see letters; these represent the four “cardinal points,” which are like a compass for your life. They include the Ascendant, the IC (Imuni Coeli), the Descendant, and the MC (Midheaven).

Choose a planet line and follow the trail through the map. As you do this, pay attention to which countries and cities it crosses. These places were influenced by the planets at the time of your birth.

Planetary Line Meanings

Astrocartography Beginners Guide to Finding Your Best Place in the World

  • Sun: If your Sun line runs through a location, you’ll feel “at home.” This is a place where you can be yourself or your best version. The Sun line also brings vitality, success, confidence, and overall good vibes.
  • Moon: Moon lines indicate a place that touches you on a deep, emotional level. If you travel, move, or live on a Moon line, you’ll experience a profound connection. It’s an excellent place to start a family. The Moon is also changeable, so locations on Moon lines can create the perfect conditions for making life changes.
  • Mercury: Mercury lines are connected to mental stimulation. Go here to meet new people, take classes, write a novel, or learn to speak a language. You’ll be more curious and inclined to see all the things in Mercury line locations.
  • Venus: If you’re looking for love, visit your Venus line. It’s the perfect place to meet your true love! The Venus line can also bring abundance, comfort, success, and money. You’ll also appear more attractive in these locations.
  • Mars: Looking for excitement and adventure? Find out where Mars lines cross the globe! Places on your Mars line are full of activity, so expect plenty of action. It’s a fabulous line for ambitious pursuits or when you wish to develop leadership skills. However, the energy can be aggressive and angry. You’ll need to be careful that you don’t lose your cool or do something impulsive.
  • Jupiter: Jupiter is the planet associated with luck and expansion, so it only makes sense that your Jupiter line locations will be where to go if you want to attract more of the good stuff. Find Jupiter, and you’ll know where you can steer your fortune in your favor!
  • Saturn: Saturn is a hard taskmaster, so generally, it’s not considered one of the better places to visit or live. Serious Saturn wants you to be responsible, so there may be lessons in these locations. It can be helpful if you need to grow up. Nothing will mature you faster than hanging out in a Saturnian location.
  • Uranus: Uranus line locations bring exciting changes and surprises. If you want to walk on the wild side, this is where to go. It’s unpredictable, so you’ll need to be ready for sudden shifts or unexpected events, good or not.
  • Neptune: Neptune governs spirituality and creativity, so travel to Neptune places if you want to connect to the divine or your imagination. It also has escapist tendencies, the ideal location for the trip of your dreams! Neptune is not practical, though, which means something about it might feel like a mirage.
  • Pluto: Pluto lines bring transformation. If you feel stuck in a rut, follow your Pluto line and find a location. Like Saturn, it’s not easy, but the end result is a new you. Pluto can be volatile, so you’ll want to protect your energy if you live on this line!

For example, let’s say you choose the Venus line because you want to plan a romantic trip. As you trace the Venus line, you notice it goes through Barcelona. You can choose that location or anywhere within a 600-mile orb. Keep in mind, if you are looking for a place to live, picking a spot directly on the line could be challenging! You’ll get all the good and bad energies of that planet. According to Jim Lewis, if you’re west of the line, the energy will be more potent in a positive way.

You may also want to consider focusing on planets that are well-aspected in your natal chart. For example, my natal Moon is at a harmonious angle with my natal Mars. In contrast, my Sun is locked in a harsh aspect with Saturn.

The Cardinal Points (AC, IC, DC, MC)

Also, pay attention to the letters next to the planetary symbols, the cardinal points, or the four angles of the chart. (Learn more about the angular houses of the Zodiac.)

  • AC (Ascendant) - the Ascendant is the image you present to the world.
  • IC (Imum Coeli) - this is your root, home, and family.
  • DC (Descendant) - the Descendant is connected to your relationships.
  • MC (Midheaven) - the Midheaven is your career and status.

The combination of your planetary line plus the cardinal point adds additional information. For example, my Moon line is connected to my IC, which explains why I felt so serene in Hawaii (of course, the chill island groove didn’t hurt!).

Paran Lines Explained

Finally, consider the paran lines. These are the horizontal lines crossing the map parallel to each other. These paran lines have a beginning point where two AC (Ascendant), IC (Imum Coeli), MC (Midheaven), or DC (Descendant) lines intersect. According to Lisa Stardust, “They are the energies of the planets in the angular houses that are concentrated in the region.” In other words, they are intense! With that intensity may come challenges, so you may want to keep some distance from the origin point if you want ease. For example, Hawaii isn’t close to any paran lines. In contrast, Alaska, which also falls on my Moon line, is on my Pluto paran line. This combo promises emotional volatility and transformation. No thanks! I’ll take island life!

  • AC - Planets on the Ascendant bring new flavors to your personality. For example, if the Moon is on your AC, you might feel more emotional in that location. It might bring out your sensitivity.
  • IC - Planets on the IC impact your home or family. For example, if the Sun is on your IC line, your home life would be warm and inviting, a place where you can be yourself.
  • MC - Planets on the MC affect your career and public image. If Venus is on your MC, you’ll look cute, attract good things, and be a shining star in your industry.
  • DC - Planets on the DC will have something to say about your relationships. In fact, if Venus lands on your DC, this is where to go to find love.

What if the location you want to visit or live in doesn’t have any planetary lines running through it? For example, I live in Wisconsin, and my astrocartography chart is line-free in that area.

Lisa Stardust cautions, “Don’t let the stars hold you back from living your life. Sometimes, you have to explore for your own sake and knowledge.” Astrocartography is meant to provide insight into influences in your life and spark reflection. As Lisa says, “It’s your life, and you want to be happy and have fun.”

The Relocated Chart

A relocated chart is a concept within astrocartography, the astrology of location. A relocated chart goes beyond the planetary lines on your astrocartography map and reveals how your entire life changes in a new location, and how this new location contributes to your personal growth and fulfilling your soul’s purpose.

If you’ve ever moved to a new city, state, or country, you probably know what it’s like to feel like you don’t quite know who you are or how to fit in to your new environment. This doesn’t happen just because you changed your surroundings.

It’s because by moving you created an entirely new version of you AND your natal chart, known as a “relocated chart.” Relocated charts are used in astrocartography to help people decide where to move.

Your relocated chart is your natal chart, but adjusted for the time and place of your new destination. It’s still you, but it’s a different version of you - one that gets to live out its own story, with its own challenges and opportunities. Think of it like trying on a new style of clothing. You’re still yourself, but the world sees and responds to you differently, and so you carry yourself differently, too.

Astrocartography helps put words to how you and your entire life has changed or may change in that location and how to best navigate it. However, when you live in a new location, both your natal chart and your relocated chart are active. One does not cancel out the other and neither one is more important - they both play out simultaneously.

Your natal chart shows the overarching story of your soul’s journey, while your relocated chart highlights what you’re here to grow into to help fulfil your natal promise. This is why, when I investigate the transits, life cycles, and yearly themes for someone living abroad, I always consider both charts - their natal and relocated chart.

Your relocated self is still connected to your natal chart, but it has its own timeline, its own growth, and its own opportunities. The more you know about these different versions of you, the more you’re able to make sense of the potentially conflicting energies pulling you in different directions.

Living somewhere new doesn’t just shift your life - it reveals a new part of who you are. This part of you doesn’t cease to exist when you leave the location behind. You may feel like there’s some unresolved business, but the wisdom you’ve gained from your time in that location will continue to exist within you regardless.

How to Generate a Relocated Chart

Before you can generate your relocated chart, you need to have accurate birth details: date, time, and place of birth.

  1. Change your birth time to match the time zone of your destination: Use a free tool like this to make this easier. You don’t have to account for daylight savings.
  2. Change your birth location to your destination
  3. Interpret your relocated chart like a normal natal chart: How does your life look different compared to your original natal chart?

How to Pull Up a Relocation Chart

When pulling up a relocation chart, you will want to go to astro.com, then click on the “charts and calculations” section then click on “extended chart selection.” It should take you to a page where you can enter in your birth information at the top. Below that you will see a section titled “Sections” and then below that a drop down called “Chart type.” Click on that dropdown and select “relocation chart (needs ref. place).”

Once you pull up your relocation chart, it will look identical to your birth chart. At the very bottom of the page below the chart, in blue text it says “click to choose a different reference place”. Click on that, and from there you can enter in any city in the world. If you choose somewhere far enough away from where you will born, you can see how the planets in your chart shift to different houses and how the rising sign is now completely different.

Whereas the astrocartography map only indicates when planets meet up with any of the four angles in your chart, the relocation chart shows what houses the planets shift to, even if they aren’t touching angles. So you get all this additional insight into what parts of your chart are activated in every single city, no matter what.

Again, if you're entering in a city that is similar in timezone and longitude/latitude to where you were born, the chart is not going to change much. The planets will probably all still fall in the same houses, and you will likely have the same rising sign.

Relocation Chart Example

Here’s a cheat sheet for what each of the lines emphasizes most:

  • Sun Line: You can’t hide on a sun line. If you’re seeking validation, attention or just warmth, head here. Though too much sun is a thing (wear your sunscreen and cover up!), these places boost your confidence and ego, allowing you to freely take up more space.
  • Moon Line: Moon lines help you get in touch with your inner rhythms, desires and emotions. This can be both deeply empowering and highly destabilizing. Move to a Moon line (or even vacation there) when you’re ready to get real and feel all the feelings.
  • Mercury Line: Your mind will be constantly buzzing on a Mercury line. You’re reading a lot, thinking a lot and talking a lot. Mercury is the trickster and the most flexible of the planets, so this can be a place where you socialize constantly but also where you can easily become overstimulated.
  • Venus Line: Venus is the planet of love and desire and you can definitely find your soulmate on a Venus line. Even if you don’t fall in love, this will typically be a place where you feel connected, supported and creative. Also, you might not meet a lover on your Venus line, but you may discover that a Venus line runs through your partner’s hometown!
  • Mars Line: Mars is the planet of action and separation, and nothing is ever dull when living on or visiting a Mars line. Expect constant movement and lots of energy in these places. Depending on how Mars fits into your chart, this line could leave you overheated or inspired.
  • Jupiter Line: Jupiter is a teacher, mentor and guru. In fact, you might notice that a Jupiter line runs through the city where you studied abroad, took a meditation retreat or went to undergrad. Jupiter lines bring inspiration, expansion and the culmination of goals. Jupiter is also the planet of luck (both good and bad), so things may feel especially fated in these locations.
  • Saturn Line: Things get serious on the Saturn line. Heavy. Responsible. If you’re looking to commit to something, whether that’s a relationship or a career, the Saturn line improves your discipline (though it can also make you melancholy).
  • Uranus Line: The only thing permanent is impermanence on a Uranus line. Uranus is the disruptor planet, and its influence tends to keep everything constantly in flux. Uranus is also an innovator and revolutionary and this is a good location to fight for the future you believe in.
  • Neptune Line: If you’re seeking a dreamy escape, head to your Neptune line. When here, you get that feeling of falling down the rabbit hole and wearing rose colored glasses. This is a long, strange trip and a wonderful vacation. Neptune lines can also be places where you gain influence and carry a certain mystique. People want what you have here.
  • Pluto Line: Pluto lines are as transformational as they are volatile. The perfect place to go if you want to burn it all down and start over again. Less ideal if you’re looking to relax or continue what you’ve already started though.

I want to give a personal example of how I’ve seen the energy of the relocation chart manifest in my own life. Note how all of my planets in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) shift from being in the 4th, 8th and 12th houses in my birth chart to now being in the career oriented houses - 2nd, 6th, 10th - in my relocation chart. And Jupiter on the ascendant! Way more of a positive focus on career for me in London.

Regular birth chart
Relocation chart for London
My regular birth chart on the left My relocation chart for London on the right

I have only lived in the UK for a year and half, and it was when I attended grad school at age 23 from the fall of 2015 until the end of 2016. Throughout college, I had been applying to fashion internships in New York and had zero success hearing back. Within a month of starting school in London, I had friends in my grad school course connecting me to internship opportunities, which led to even more internships from there.

Although I had to return to the US at the end of 2016, because it was impossible to get a work visa for an entry level magazine job, work opportunities have continued to pop up from the UK ever since. When I left my job to be a full time astrologer in 2019, British Vogue reached out several months later, asking if I wanted to do horoscopes for them. In 2021, I put out into the universe that I wanted to write a book and had started writing an outline on my own, and then a literary agent from London contacted me.

My book then ended up being published in the UK first before America. I have more Instagram followers based in London than I do in Los Angeles, which is shocking, because L.A. is like the astrology capital of the world.

Relocation chart for Rome, Italy

The Aquarius and Pisces planets which are usually in my 7th and 8th houses have shifted to the 4th and the 5th houses in Italy. You can see that the sun and Mercury in this chart both fall really close to the IC angle, so in my astrocartography map, you would see Mercury and Sun lines running through Italy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read an astrocartography map?

Start by looking at the planetary lines crossing your map. Each planet represents a different type of energy-such as love (Venus), career (Saturn or MC), or emotions (Moon). The places where the lines fall show where you may experience those energies most strongly.

What is the best line in astrocartography?

It depends on your goals. For example, Venus lines are often considered favorable for love, beauty, and abundance. Jupiter lines can bring luck and growth. Sun lines often make people feel at home and confident.

Can astrocartography predict love or career success?

Astrocartography doesn’t predict exact events, but it can highlight places where you’re more likely to experience certain types of energy. For example, a Venus line might support romance, while a Saturn line could bring career growth but with challenges.

What if I don’t have any lines where I live?

That’s common! It just means that no strong planetary energies are emphasized in that location. You can still live happily and successfully without lines nearby. Some people even prefer line-free zones for balance.

Is astrocartography real or scientific?

Astrocartography is based on astrology, which is not considered a science.
