Xavier Legette, born on January 29, 2001, is an American professional football wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He stands out in a wide receiver class like the 2024 NFL Draft with his size-speed combination.
Hailing from Mullins High School in Mullins, South Carolina, Legette garnered a 3-star rating from ESPN and an impressive 4-star grade from 247 Sports. During his senior year, he received 1,826 yards with 19 touchdowns and passed for 887 yards with 14 touchdowns.
Legette did very little on the field for the Gamecocks until his senior year in 2023. Legette was one of the SEC’s breakout playmakers in 2023, catching 71 passes for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. It was a huge increase in production compared to 2022 (18-167-3) and 2021 (8-63-1). He remained as a fifth-year senior and enjoyed a breakout season as the primary receiver for quarterback Spencer Rattler. Legette went from a little-used depth receiver to catching almost double the amount of passes of any other Gamecock receiver. His seven touchdowns also led the entire team. Had he not played in 2023, Legette lacked the draft value with such a sparse resume. After posting 1,255 yards last year, he's now expected to be taken on Day 2 with a chance of sneaking into the end of the first round. Most draft boards list him as being between the sixth and tenth rated wide receiver.

Exceptional Physical Attributes
Xavier Legette has insane measurables. He's a size and speed mismatch that always plays well in the NFL. Legette is a very solid 6-1 and 221 pounds, and yet ran a 4.39 40-time at the NFL Combine, one of only eight receivers that clocked sub 4.4 40-times. He's a tick older at 23 years, but doesn't carry the level of experience that his age may normally suggest. His low 4.3 speed in the forty-yard dash along with the size height combination isn't something we have seen since DK Metcalf.

At the Senior Bowl he was measured at 6-1 which is a couple of inches shorter than billed. This will ham his draft stock as he was looked at as a height, weight, speed freak.
Strengths
Legette excels in making contested catches and using his physicality to gain yards after the catch, making him a potential deep threat and red-zone target. He is a long-strider with a second gear and can explode in the open field, displaying sheer speed to out-race defenders. That ability will be diminished somewhat in the NFL, but there is no doubt that he has above-average speed for a big wideout.
Legette is a physical route-runner who does not shy away from contact during his stem. He does not lose speed while hand-fighting with DBs. His best trait is winning at the catch point. Legette has outstanding leaping ability paired with strong hand-eye coordination to pluck passes out of the air at its highest point. Immense body control and positioning allow him to uncover from coverage for back shoulder throws etc.

Weaknesses
Entering the next level, Legette has some rawness and could use development in terms of his route-running. He can be a bit linear after the catch. Given Legette’s skill set, it’s surprising that he was not featured more in 2019-2022; he had only 41 catches over those four seasons. Leggette however has only played one significant year of college football and scouts will have to determine if 2023 was the new norm or a bit of a unicorn. His transition to the NFL will require improvements in footwork and explosiveness off the line, as well as enhanced ability in the open field.

NFL Projection and Comparison
For the NFL, Legette is a potential starting receiver who has the athletic upside of a No. 1 receiver. Legette is a 1-year wonder, but there his no doubt that he has the skill set of a pro starter. Team sources say they think Legette could be a late first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and should not last long if he slips to the second round.
Legette is reminiscent of Breshad Perriman coming out of Central Florida. Perriman (6-2, 215) and Legette are close to the same size and showed good speed for big receivers. Perriman also had some rawness entering the NFL, and that led to him being a late first-rounder. Legette could be a better version of Perriman as a pro.

Xavier Legette projects as WR2/3 early in his career with plenty of potential. He can be used in a multitude of ways. Legette can operate as a constant vertical deep shot threat for a heavy run-and-play action offense. Additionally, he makes plays with manufactured touches like, jet sweeps and jet pop passes. He should be featured as a run-after-catch threat frequently. He is a talented kick return specialist. A former high school QB turned wide receiver, his developmental upside/ceiling is high if nurtured properly.
