In Sanskrit, the word “chakra” translates to “wheel” or “disk”. Chakras are in an ongoing state between balance and imbalance. Like standing at the very tip of a mountain summit trying not to slip off either way, our chakras can become underactive (a blockage of energy) or overactive (distribution of too much energy). There are 7 chakras (root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and crown).
But first things first: What are the 7 chakras? The 7 chakras are made up of the crown chakra, third eye chakra, throat chakra, heart chakra, solar plexus chakra, sacral chakra, and root chakra. Each chakra is correlated with a different part of the body and has a different meaning.
The root chakra or muladhara chakra is located at the base of the spine. Root chakra healing is particularly important since it’s the foundation for all the other chakras and our overall well being. The root chakra, on the other hand, is located at the base of your spine and helps you withstand challenges and feel grounded. The root chakra represents our connection to mother earth, our survival instincts, and individuality. The root chakra relates to our basic right to be here and to have. It is linked to us feeling grounded, secure, and having our basic needs met.
Just like a tree with weak or rotten roots can’t grow strong and develop to its full potential, if your root chakra is imbalanced, it’ll affect your whole chakra system.
A balanced root chakra is not only essential for a healthy body, but also for good mental health (yes, the psychologists agree!). And who wouldn’t want that? A balanced root chakra makes you feel grounded and centered.

Feeling weak or uncomfortable in your physical body. A blocked root chakra can make it hard to see your own worth. Your boundaries might become weak or undefined. When your root chakra becomes overactive, you might find yourself becoming lazy or stagnating. Egoism and greed. Impatience. Low self-esteem. Self-doubt. Feeling heavy and stiff.
To be grounded is to have inner strength and emotional stability. The root chakra is our lowest chakra, where our basic needs need to be met for us to believe we can survive. We need food, shelter, and safety. This means our root chakra influences our sense of survival and protection. This chakra is also linked to abundance and wealth. When our root chakra is balanced, we feel deserving of prosperity and success in different aspects of life.
Living with an Open and Balanced Root Chakra
When your root chakra is open and balanced, you feel connected to the earth, present physically, grounded and stable. Because this chakra oversees our physical body, our overall physical health, immune system, and vitality are linked to it. You feel comfortable in your body when your root chakra is open. Feeling grounded and stable allows us to trust the process as we move through life’s challenges and happy surprises.
Living with a Closed and Unbalanced Root Chakra
When your root chakra is unbalanced, inactive or underactive you likely feel disconnected from the earth, unsafe, fearful, insecure and have low confidence. An over activated root chakra encourages an unnecessary focus on material possessions, greed and stubbornness. When you think of a house, your root chakra is your foundation. If all your energy is focused on the foundation, there isn’t enough shared with the rest of your house where you can succeed in other parts of life. If all your energy is focussed elsewhere, you’re living on the upper floors only - but without a strong base, you will always feel like a collapse is imminent.

Activating and Balancing Root Chakra
To open, activate, and balance your root chakra look at practices that connect you to the earth and your body - earthing, physical exercise, time in nature, boosting your confidence, meditation, energy healing, work with grounding crystals (e.g., red jasper, hematite), saying affirmations.
Luckily, Yoga provides us with powerful tools to manage situations like that. One of them is positive affirmations. Affirmations are a powerful tool to organize our thoughts. Repeating affirmations is what makes them most powerful. Commit to a daily practice like adding this to your morning routine to set you up for the day. Remember just like practicing Yoga, it’s through commitment and regularity that you’ll get the most benefits long term. Daily affirmations don’t require much time and the more you do it, the easier it’ll become.
Root Chakra Affirmations
Affirmations are a powerful tool to organize our thoughts. Chakra affirmations direct awareness and positivity to the body’s energetic centers. Repeating a chakra affirmation daily can help improve physical, emotional and spiritual well-being by enabling the free flow of energy through these choke points. Combining a chakra affirmation practice with mindfulness strengthens our relationship with the body and its wisdom. When we turn our attention to sensations in and around the chakras, we become available for insight regarding where in the body we feel spacious, and where we could use some gentle care.
Root chakra affirmations are about your basic needs for survival. It’s important to remember that an affirmation cannot be a lie to yourself. If your affirmation is a lie to yourself about what is actually going on in your life (in terms of eating, sleeping, exercising, housing, financial security, safety), it’s probably time to make a change (if possible). If you’re running a yoga business, don’t accept financial fatigue as the norm. Besides sticking to facts, make sure your affirmations use positive words and are stated in the present tense. It isn’t helpful to hang on to the past. Instead, sit with it and ask yourself what you have learned from those experiences. Once you’ve gone over that, let it go while still keeping the lesson.
These valuable root chakra affirmations for grounding and prosperity can open, activate, and balance your first chakra. Depending on what you need, you’ll be opening your root chakra or sharing energy with other energy points. These affirmations encourage balancing the root chakra.
