The Nintendo Switch, introduced in 2017, revolutionized the video game industry with its hybrid nature, offering both handheld and docked gaming experiences. With a library boasting over 10,000 titles, the Switch provides a diverse range of high-quality games. Emulators like Ryujinx allow users to enjoy these games on other devices, expanding the Switch experience.
What are Nintendo Switch ROMs?
ROM stands for Read-Only Memory. In the Nintendo Switch context, a ROM is a complete digital backup of a Switch game, including all scripts, images, data, language packs, and sounds. A standard ROM file is typically in NSP or XCI format. Compressed formats like ZIP, RAR, and NSZ need to be uncompressed before use.
A NSW ROM file enables you to play that game on other devices without needing an original Switch device. There are two ways to own a Nintendo Switch ROM. Exporting a ROM file for the Nintendo Switch from a physical game disc or digital file from the eShop is not easy. Even if you have the necessary tools, the extraction process still has risks.
After you download a Nintendo Switch Game ROM, you will need to know how to make it work. A powerful enough system: Current emulators support Windows, macOS, and Android.
Finding the perfect ROM is an extremely difficult task. But if you have come to NSWPedia, everything becomes surprisingly easy. Our team is present in every nook and cranny on the Internet to collect ROM files for the Nintendo Switch. These are newly released, trending and popular games. In addition, you can download ROMs from legal sources like the Nintendo eShop.

Certainly, the game ROM collection that NSWPedia collects and shares are all in standard and safe formats. As Nintendo Switch owners and Switch emulator users, we know the sources to download the latest and fastest game ROM files. People can then browse the game catalog or search to find games they love or suit their needs. You can download all files at maximum speed. This project will be maintained by us as long as possible. If you want to contribute a part to the Nintendo Switch ROMs user community on emulators then you can join us.
Thanks to emulators, you can now run ROM files and enjoy original Nintendo Switch games without needing the original system. Currently, we can confirm that there are Switch emulators that support Windows, MacOS and Android. Nintendo Switch emulators can run original games smoothly. But for the best gaming experience, your system must meet the minimum requirements of the emulator.
Ryujinx: A Leading Nintendo Switch Emulator
Ryujinx is a Nintendo Switch emulator developed by GDKChan. It provides a smooth and efficient experience when running ROMs. With its friendly and accessible interface, it brings maximum convenience to users.
Ryujinx was able to boot and render the introductions of Super Mario Odyssey in early June 2018. Even though Ryujinx and yuzu's teams were composed of different people, their development was steady and almost equal, though Ryujinx seemed to be a bit quicker in booting previously incompatible games or improving the rendering of certain games.
The majority of games in the Nintendo Switch library boot past menus and go in-game on this emulator, with roughly half of those considered playable without bugs.

In July 2020, resolution upscaling was implemented. At the end of August 2020, Ryujinx became the first Nintendo Switch emulator to implement local wireless multiplayer support. This allows games that support local multiplayer to be played with other people globally that are also using Ryujinx.
On November 26, 2022, Ryujinx released their first port for Mac, bringing Switch emulation to macOS for the first time. As new Apple Silicon Macs use the same Arm instruction set as the Switch, they were able to use a hypervisor rather than pure emulation on the new Macs.
While the compatibility and performance were outstanding for a first release, many of the features (such as Transform Feedback Buffers and Buffer Mirrors) were hacked together and couldn’t be up streamed to the main branch as they were. Since the initial release, proper implementations have slowly been introduced to the master branch.
Before editing, review the Getting involved and Recommended pages. This fork is intended to be a direct continuation for existing Ryujinx users. The project accepts pull requests and code changes.
Kenji-NX and Ryubing work together closely and share most changes, but Kenji-NX intends to implement changes that better align with the original Ryujinx interface philosophy.

Key Features and Developments:
- Early Development: The Switch port of Puyo Puyo Tetris was the first commercial game to show a logo in early February 2018.
- Initial Bootable Games: The titles Cave Story+, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, Ryujinx, One Piece Unlimited World Red Edition Deluxe Edition and 1-2 Switch were among the first group of games to boot on this emulator on April to May 2018.
- Local Wireless Multiplayer: At the end of August 2020, Ryujinx became the first Nintendo Switch emulator to implement local wireless multiplayer support.
- macOS Support: On November 26, 2022, Ryujinx released their first port for Mac, bringing Switch emulation to macOS for the first time.
Important Note: Ryujinx is no longer under development, so don't expect any more features or improvements.
There are currently many Nintendo Switch compatible emulators for different operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Linux. Below is a list of the best Switch emulators voted by our editors.
If you want to run ROMs on your Android device, we recommend using the Egg NS Emulator app. It is completely free and supports two file formats: NSP and XCI. With its user interface, it will help players use it easily.
Currently, the Switch only has two standard formats officially endorsed by Nintendo which are NSP (Nintendo Submission Package) and XCI (game data storage file). If you download a file with a different format, it may be a scam.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Some users have reported issues with launching games through Launchbox. For example, starting a Switch game from Launchbox using Ryujinx as the emulator brings up the Ryujinx game menu...but it doesn't start the actual game. It just sits there at the Ryujinx game list.
Another issue reported is related to running games in the background with a black screen when using the "Hide all windows not in exclusive fullscreen mode" option in Launchbox.
Status-ingame: Boots and goes in-game but suffers from one or more of the following: crashes, deadlocks, gpu bugs, distractingly bad audio, or is simply too slow.
Compatibility List and Testing
This is an attempt to make unified compatibility list for everything that can be ran on Switch and if it cannot be ran, for alternatives users can utilize.
It requires further testing. I am trying between 4 versions currently, I found some good settings shared from someone who supposedly ran this in 30FPS stable. 2 persons actually.
Done. Wind Waker is rather good and Twilight Princess is satisfactory. We can still find more though. I do not have Android 11 that has full OC but Android 14 should have it soon. Combined with some decluttering app, we can maybe push it further with certain settings. Its a lot of moving parts and I do it in free time so no promise when it can be.
Note: You must use an official master/main build with any hacks disabled. Follow the new issue template and remove any unnecessary text, but please leave all formatting intact. Search for a game first before adding a new issue; if you find an existing issue that is out of date, reply to it with a copied/pasted new issue template. A curator will apply appropriate labels to the issue.
Here's a compatibility list based on user experiences:
| Game | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wind Waker | Good | Runs well |
| Twilight Princess | Satisfactory | Acceptable performance |
