Tarot card spreads act as pathways, guiding seekers through complexities to uncover clarity and revelations. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced reader, tarot spreads hold the key to gaining insights and guidance in various aspects of life. This guide explores a range of tarot spreads, designed to answer specific questions and reveal various facets of your life’s journey.

Tarot Spread Layouts

Understanding Tarot Spreads

A tarot spread (also referred to as a layout) is a pre-selected pattern that the cards are placed on the surface in front of the reader. I’ve said before that the cards are like the pages in a storybook and the layout is what puts those pages in order so that you can understand the story. The primary purpose of tarot spreads is to reveal hidden information and offer clarity on specific issues. By laying out the cards in a particular pattern, a reader can interpret their meanings and their relationships with each other.

Our intuition searches for patterns and connections, so laying out more than one card gives us something to connect together and look for relationships between one card and another, like telling the parts of a story. If you prefer to just pull cards without a structured layout, and that’s what works for you, go for it.

There is a vast array of tarot spreads available, ranging from simple one-card spreads for quick insights to more complex layouts for deeper understanding.

Simple Tarot Spreads

One-Card Tarot Spread

For those seeking a quick and straightforward tarot experience, the one-card tarot spread is perfect! This super simple tarot spread focuses specifically on one question or issue. Performing a one-card tarot spread is a breeze! To begin, simply focus on your question and shuffle the deck excitedly.

One of the most significant advantages of using the one-card tarot spread is its incredible ease of use and instant insights. Questions that begin with “Will I…” can lead to a passive role in your own future. It is therefore essential to avoid them.

Three-Card Tarot Spread

The Three-Card Tarot Spread offers quick insight into past influences, present situations, and future outcomes, making it a simple yet powerful divination tool. The three-card tarot spread is another versatile and adaptable spread that’s suitable for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike.

The beauty of the three-card tarot spread lies in its adaptability. You can customize the spread to answer a variety of questions by altering the meanings of the card positions.

Three Card Spread

Five-Card Tarot Spread

For those seeking deeper insight and answers to “why” questions, the five-card tarot spread offers a more in-depth analysis of your situation. This spread involves pulling five cards clockwise and interpreting them based on their positions. With the added complexity and depth, the five-card spread is ideal for more advanced readers or anyone looking to take a deep dive into their tarot journey.

The five-card tarot spread can be arranged in two popular formations: the Cross and the Rectangle. The Cross formation consists of a middle row of three cards showing Past, Present, and Future, with one card placed beneath the row to reveal a core reason for the circumstances as they exist, and another card drawn and placed above the three-card row to show the potential of the situation. The Rectangle formation arranges the theme card in the middle. Four other cards are placed around it, forming a rectangle.

Connecting with Spirit Guides

Spirit Guides, angels, deities, ghosts, source energy, divine beings...whatever you believe... Here's a spread for those times you want to connect with something higher. I love using the tarot to practice my channeling. I find it to be beneficial to use a pendulum while I do my spreads. Especially for those times I have a yes/no question I would like answered.

If using a pendulum isn't your thing, try an 'even card means yes // odd means no' type question. Regardless what you choose, be sure to create clear intention in what you are wanting. Try an easy question at first to test out that you are receiving accurate replies. For example, "my name is _____, yes or no?"

My intent with this spread is for it to be a platform or stepping stone for greater communication. I want it to open channels, paths, and doorways for you to be guided further. This spread works with any divination deck. Please don't feel restricted to only traditional tarot decks.

If you have connected with your Spirit Guides in the past - this is a spread for you. If this is your first time wanting to contact your Spirit Guides, try starting out with my other spread for connecting with your guides. Then come back and try this one :) Channeling is something I do frequently, especially when I'm using a divination tool.

I'm of the belief that we constantly have Spirit Guides who help us with certain things in life. With each lesson and experience we have different Guides who are always available to us. I believe our Guides have specific lessons and guidance they can offer us at all times - we simply need to ask and allow.

Similarly, our Guides have the birds eye view of our lives. They can see hurdles, obstacles and alternative routes we should be taking. They know what we can do to ease our stress and where we need to push harder because success is not out of reach. They have the answers for us.
