Chickens, the Oldest Domesticated Bird

Chickens have been part of our lives and cultures for centuries. They’re believed to be the first domesticated birds, being domesticated in Southeast Asia from the red junglefowl between 10,000 and 7,000 years ago. From there, the Egyptians and the Greeks started to develop early incubation methods to raise more chickens. The Romans spread chickens as they conquered, as they were kept as pets and used as divination tools but soon started to consume chickens in the 2nd century BCE. From there, chickens spread across the world and became a critical food source for humans.

Specific Uses for Chickens in Magick

Chickens have three main magickal purposes to them. These purposes can vary depending on how you use them or your intentions, so know that you need to be focused if you want a successful outcome. Here are the uses for chickens in magick today.

Chickens in Divination

The way a chicken eats can help you predict an outcome. Place the chicken in an enclosed area, like a cage, and scatter food while saying the question you need answered. If the chicken hurriedly goes to the food and scratches the ground as usual, you know the outcome will be positive. If it pays no mind to the food, proceed with caution.

Chickens in Healing

We have all heard that chicken soup is good for the soul, well it's also good to help with colds. Science has proven that chicken broth does have some anti-inflammatory properties. So, if you are struggling with a persistent cold, a warm bowl of soup could help your body fight it off.

Chickens for Home Protection

Today people use the word “chicken” to make fun of someone who is cowardly, but chickens can be tough little creatures when they want to be. Chickens are strong mothers who will defend their young and are known for being quick to adopt chicks in need. So, the image of the chicken can be used to symbolize a mother’s protection and the strength with which she must defend her young.

Meanwhile, the rooster symbolizes protection and safety in the home. Roosters keep a close eye on their flocks and will call out loudly to warn them should they see danger approaching. Roosters will also chase away and fight off predators or intruders with no fear for their lives. So, the presence of a rooster can boost any protection spell or protect your home from unwanted energies you may not be aware are trying to invade.

Chickens are also perfect tools for getting rid of curses or negative spells before they can harm you. If you are suspicious that an area around you has been cursed, you can place a chicken there and watch as they scratch up the dirt. It will look like the chicken is doing what it normally does to search for food, but they are also scratching at curses and cutting them away before they have a chance to harm you.

Uses for Different Parts of the Chicken

Each piece of the chicken has distinct uses. You cannot use one part of the chicken and expect to get the same results from another; if you need something specific, you need the part of the chicken that best corresponds to your needs. You could try to use any part of a chicken for what you need but be aware that you will have a 50/50 chance of getting the result you want. To have a higher success rate, take a look at the magickal properties of the different parts of the chickens we have listed; one will surely stand out for what you need when you need it.

Chicken Feathers

You can bundle feathers into a duster on a cleaned wooden stick. The duster can be used to cleanse negative energies hiding in the corners of your home or as a fan during cleansing rituals. An entire feathered wing would be the best tool during cleansing rituals, but fresh feathers would still suffice. The feathers can be added to satchels when making protective charms. Black hen feathers can be burned, and their ashes can be used as uncrossing powder both to protect your home and to add to protective charms.

Chicken Feet

Dried Chicken Feet are used in the practice of Voodoo, as well as other magical traditions, for protection and for enemy work. When it comes to Voodoo, Hoodoo, and other practices of those from Africa, the foot of a chicken has always held a very powerful and special meaning.

Since chicken feet are essential tools for the chicken, not just to walk but to dig for food, they have a strong connection to the earth and grounding energies. Chicken feet can be used as a protective charm against negative energy directed towards you, such as hate, jealousy, and even dark desires. Its grounding nature will keep you focused and be aware if others are speaking the truth or lying to you. If you believe that a curse has been placed on you, you can scratch the chicken’s nails lightly on your skin, like when a chicken digs for bugs; this will search for the negative energies and pluck them away before they harm you. Be sure that the chicken feet are not raw and have been dried so they are safe for human handling.

Oftentimes used as charms and talismans, chicken feet are a wonderful addition to any spell that involves protection; be it protection in your love life, protection in general, protection of your belongings, etc. My grandmother would usually use them to protect from dark energy, evil spirits, and psychic attacks. The way in which the chicken foot works is based in how chickens usually react when messed with. Imagine a chicken scratching you with its legs. Ever had that happen?… It hurts.

One can also use chicken feet to curse someone by leaving one on their property with the proper intent. When it comes to how to get them any old dried up chicken foot will do. You can usually buy them in a lot of places, including pet supply stores as they can be used as treats for dogs. A little personal preference of mine is to paint them. Especially if using one as a charm. Paint anything on it really. This helps preserve it and keep animals away from it.

In many folk magic traditions (mainly Hoodoo, Voodoo, and Santeria) chicken feet have been used for both defense and to “scratch back” at one’s enemies. Their uses are pretty straight forward: Protection, uncrossing, crossing or cursing. Now, obviously, this is not a hoodoo or voodoo site, but when there is a resource that I have, I like to share it, knowing many practitioners of any rootwork might not have access. Otherwise, I offer them as collection items for those who simply love vulture culture.

These charms will vary in size and shape, but all of them will have a decorative fringes and a ball chain for attaching to whatever you choose. Some feathering may be preserved as well.

All animal products are wildcrafted, vultured, or ethically harvested. Mountain Hedgewitch and its constituents do not support the senseless killing of animals or plants for profit, and strive to sell products that have been ethically found or killed and used to their entirety.

Chicken Foot Charms
Chicken Foot Charms

Here are some options for chicken foot charms:

  • Standard hen foot charm
  • Cock’s foot charm with spur - amplified “scratch”. Especially potent.
  • ”Fuck off” foot charm - chicken foot is dried with the middle finger flying. A light humored but strong magicked charm or decoration.

Chicken Bones

Chicken bones are the only part of the chicken that can be used for versatile purposes. Its bones can be used as a substitute for other animal bones in spells should you not be able to obtain the ones you need. Before using the bones as a substitute, though, you will need to charge them with the energy of the needed animal either by having them charge under the moon with a figure of the animal or tying a piece of the animal, like a claw or fur, that you need to the bones so that they absorb its energy.

Chicken Wishbone

Wishbones are usually obtained during family gatherings after the chicken has been consumed. Two people each hold one end of the bone, make a wish, and pull until the wishbone breaks. The person who has the larger piece will have their wish granted. This method can also be done solo. If you want a wish to be granted, make your wish and break the bone, and you will know if your wish will be granted or not based on the size of the piece in your dominant hand.

Chicken Eggs

Chicken eggs are mainly used for cleansing. If you feel ill or believe someone has cast dark magick on you, rub the egg up and down your arms, legs, chest, and face. The egg will gather any negative energies, and you can either bury it off your property or cook it and feed it to live chickens so they can consume and destroy the negative energies. Egg shells can also be ground up to make a cleansing dust for homes or sacred satchels.

We rely heavily on the meat and eggs that chickens provide, and because of that, we may not know that chickens can help Witches as more than just food. Every part of the chicken can be used for its magickal properties, and even owning a chicken can change the dynamic of the energies that gather in your home. Now, it is not possible to have chickens in most homes without following specific property rules, so if you cannot keep a live chicken in your home, you can still humanely gather pieces of the chicken to use in your craft. Always remember to thank the chicken whose body you are using for your craft to show you respect them and to get an extra charge from the chicken’s spirit. You will not be a chicken when using the chicken in your spells, so happy casting!

Here's a table summarizing the uses of different chicken parts in magick:

Chicken Part Magickal Use
Feathers Cleansing negative energies, protective charms
Feet Protection, uncrossing, cursing
Bones Substitute for other animal bones in spells
Wishbone Wish granting
Eggs Cleansing, absorbing negative energies
