South Node in Sagittarius: Unveiling Your Past Life and Karmic Path

Because astrology can tell you so much about who you are, it comes as no surprise that it can also tell you who you’ve been. Your natal chart not only acts as a map of the sky at the moment of your birth, but it also holds the key to understanding your karmic path. And because the meaning of the South Node can tell you who you were in a past life, it’s the best way of understanding not only where you’re going, but where you’re coming from.

Everyone’s birth chart contains these Lunar Nodes, which represent the highest and lowest points of the moon’s orbit (where the moon’s orbital path crosses the sun’s orbital path, otherwise known as the “ecliptic”). And while the highest point-the North Node-guides you toward your ultimate destiny, the lowest point-the South Node-tells the story of your soul’s history.

In your birth chart, you will find that the zodiac sign that represents your South Node may feel somewhat familiar to you. That’s because your South Node also describes the innate talents and natural gifts you were blessed with from birth, shining a light on what you’ve already mastered in your previous incarnations. But because you’ve already been around this block before, your South Node may also feel like your comfort zone.

In order to get the full scope of your past lives, you also need to take the astrological house of your South Node into consideration. You should also look for any aspects your South Node may be forming with other planets in your birth chart.

Contrary to popular belief, astrology isn’t just about the planets, like your Sun and Moon signs. Those definitely play a significant role, but nonphysical objects are important too. For example, your Rising sign isn’t a planet, but it represents the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. So that’s why the lunar nodes, two nonphysical points in your birth chart, are definitely worth paying attention to.

They’re often called the Nodes of Destiny or the Nodes of Fate, and understanding what they mean should be a priority for you while you study your birth chart.

The Nodes of Destiny are the two points in the sky where the Sun and the Moon cross paths. That path-crossing only happens a few times a year, and it’s more commonly referred to as an eclipse. The Nodes are important in astrology, particularly for figuring out your greater purpose in this life (no big deal). They represent the spiritual path we should pursue, and also the innate behaviors and energies we should let go of.

The nodes are divided into two: the North Node and the South Node. Both tell a story of fate and destiny, in this life (the North Node) and your past lives (the South Node). In our birth charts, the different placements and signs show us our past and current destiny. (Because the past dictates the future…if we embrace our karmic lessons!)

The South Node of Destiny represents the places, energies, emotions, and relationships we've experienced in our past lives. It’s the karmic energy that we are trying to move out of, release, and leave behind in this lifetime. It gives us a sense of déjà vu, as we have been there, done that, and are trying to move out of that way of thinking.

This shows the patterns and ways of thinking or feeling that we are bringing into our current life path-which may not be even happening IRL at the moment but that we are holding on to. Therefore, it’s important to move out of these sentiments. And that’s not easy because slipping back into old habits is super simple if we aren’t consciously aware of what we are doing.

You can find your destiny by looking at your birth chart and circling your True Node, or North Node. The South Node will always be the opposite sign and degree of the True Node. Circle both of them in your chart and use the interpretations below.

South Node in Sagittarius

If you were born with your South Node in Sagittarius, there’s no way you weren’t an explorer in a past life. You’ve spent many lifetimes seeing the world and trying new things.

NORTH NODE IN SAGITTARIUS: your karmic purpose

You could have been a pirate setting off to sea in search of buried treasure. You could have been the captain of a world famous ship or a pilot for Pan Am.

However, you may have instead spent your time searching for deeper truths through research and educational pursuits, which means you may have been a professor; someone who acquired many different university degrees.

However, you’ve spent enough time exploring. Now, your North Node in Gemini wants you to lay down roots, connect with your local community and bring clarity to your life’s work. While Sagittarius is more focused on the experience itself, Gemini is concerned with translating that experience for the rest of the world to understand.

With the South Node moving in Sagittarius & North Node moving in Gemini this week it’s time to make the most of this momentous combination.

In our lifetime, we will most likely experience each individual node combination a total of four to five times. This is because it takes 19.5 years for each cycle of the south and north nodes to return to the position they were in when you were born.

The south and north nodes go slowly backwards, and each time a new nodal combination arrives, it brings with it chapters from the past. These chapters are from the same time the nodes were in that exact combination and may have been ones lived in our current lifetime, or experiences from or decisions made in past lives, when the node were found in the exact same signs.

Each combination of the nodes will feel familiar. The south node represents unresolved karma - dead-end patterns that get us nowhere and yet tend to keep repeating. ‘There are lessons I have learned hundreds of times’ - that kind of thing.

Meanwhile, the north node seems very foreign and unnatural - but if we make a little effort to break our bad habits and instead try on the north node attitudes and behaviours, they work wonders. They leave us astonished, sort of like a doctor’s medicine that actually cures us.” Forrest then adds the simple summary, “Think of the south node as a bad habit and the north node as its remedy.”

To those wanting to maximise the potential of each node cycle, look back to lessons learnt (or experience that you wish you’d learnt from) when the South Node was last in Sagittarius 19 years ago. As 2020-21 is your opportunity to acknowledge and resolve the negative karma or bad habits that have stuck with you since that time.

Plus, it’s a wonderful opportunity create new positive karmic patterns for the future. To do this, spend a little time studying both your own life to date, reviewing what your history - along with the world’s history - has demonstrated with this particular node combination.

If you know you don’t want to simply slip into routine responses, or know you want a clean break with negative patterns you’ve developed over the years, work out in advance how you can address in a more North Node in Gemini manner will be empowering.

But know too that embracing a “new” north node type of response instead of the old familiar south node auto-pilot reaction, you could (or in fact should) expect it to feel uncomfortable on some level.

Expert on nodes, esteemed astrologer Jan Spiller wrote in Astrology For The Soul how “In examining the position of your North Node you are looking at the basic lesson underlying this entire lifetime. Therefore, the changes may not happen all at once. Keep in mind that as you take steps in a new direction, you’re going against habits that have become deeply ingrained over many incarnations. That’s why you need to keep remembering to remember to do things in a new way and keep moving toward resolution of the past life imbalances you’ve inherited.”

Ever been singing along to a song on the radio you thought you knew off by heart only to realise the lyrics were completely different to those you’ve been singing for years and year? The south node could be compared to the lyrics you thought were right for the last 19 years (or 38, 57, 76 or 95 years!), the north node is the realisation you’ve had the words wrong all along, making the effort to learn the new words & ultimately appreciating and enjoy the song on a whole new level.

Jessica Adams explains in an earlier blog on North Node and South Node Meanings, “The whole point of all of this (node cycles) is to assist you in learning, developing, evolving and moving yourself on, spiritually. Sometimes you need a stuck record in your life to learn the song.

The Nodal cycles are about healing and closure if you are patient enough to deal with them. We all hope for an astrological cycle that H-E-A-L-S. This applies no matter if you are Sagittarius-affected or Gemini-affected.”

The following horoscopes invite you to consider how the transiting North Node in Gemini and South Node in Sagittarius activate your own patterns of catch and release, or hunger and shedding.

When I think of the Sagittarius south node, I think of the science fiction series Dune and the character of Leto the God Emperor. He’s omniscient, prescient, and is literally a know-it-all. As a result, his life is a dull prison because he can’t be surprised anymore. When you know everything, you’re closed off from wonder and delight, and the world becomes small and boring. Your Gemini north node has tasked you with rediscovering your curiosity. Be open to differing ideas and try to really listen to others.

Again, I have to mention that this series I’m writing about the nodes are going to be biased based on the ages of those who I have access to. The difference between older millennials who have south node in Sagittarius and north node in Gemini born in 1984 or 1985 and gen z who with the same nodes born in 2001 or 2002 is huge.

There’s a lot of older millennials with this nodal axis who also have Jupiter in fall, and a handful who have Jupiter in domicile. South node in Sagittarius and north node in Gemini, more than any other nodal axis, is a nodal axis that is wounded by and resists institutional rejection or validation.

An overwhelming number of folks with this nodal axis that I have met are teachers in some capacity, whether that is in formal title but a role that they just tend to take up in their social environments. This happens more so than any other nodal axis. A lot of the older millennial folks with Sagittarius south node and Gemini north node are also into podcasts. This isn’t just one or two people. There’s a number of millennials with this nodal axis who are starting or have started podcast.

North Node in Gemini/South Node in Sagittarius

You’re an independent thinker with great communication skills. You might even be fluent in a few languages. Saying what you mean and relying on facts is essential.

Natives born with North Node in Gemini are generally curious and want to learn more about everything that existence is. Common thing for Air North Nodes is logic. With South Node in Sagittarius, you were born with inner sense of ‘truth’ and some sort of a ‘moral compass’ in your chest.

Sometimes, if undeveloped/neglected, South Node in Sagittarius person can possess blind faith and reckless desire for adventure. It doesn’t necessarily have to be so, but even if you know how to turn your soul compass into the direction of North (Node), you still have deeply rooted faith in Order of Things and it can sometimes be seen as ‘I know I’m always right’ attitude.

Since Sagittarius South Node sometimes reveals a ‘preacher-type’ personality, Gemini North node has a task in this lifetime to teach you objectivity, rational thinking and help you develop a ‘filter’ when it comes to sharing your beliefs.

It can also go the other way - some Sag South Node people simply don’t know how to lie and can come off as socially awkward. I read somewhere that you start developing your Gemini North Node when you ‘stop preaching and start teaching’ and since I have my NN in 3rd house I can relate to this so much.

There is a great difference between a lecturer and a teacher - Jupiter can talk at length of its own adventures and experiences and there’s nothing wrong with that, you just need to learn how to use it in order to teach others how to apply that wisdom, instead of just ‘expanding’ their views and your popularity.

Also, Gemini North Node asks you to leave all the judgemental comments aside - it’s Mercury’s turn now, and Mercury values logic and facts above personal opinion. Opening up to many different ideas - not just those you feel comfortable and familiar with, that’s something your NN in Gemini wants you to do.

The main problem of developing NN in Gemini is understanding the concept of duality, especially if you have no other Gemini placements or personal planets in Gemini. Duality of Gemini means being able to see both sides of a coin simultaneously, without necessarily picking yours. It means being able to understand the reasons behind anything, without forming a biased opinion. Very difficult task for a Jupiterian - but essential in order to understand the highest potential of your soul.

You can become Hermes - messenger - developing your own style of teaching and conveying messages of the Universe that have been revealed to you. As i wrote previously, South Node can not and should not be left aside and abandoned, and anyhow it’s impossible to do so. It should be used as a powerful source of learned lessons in order to upgrade ourselves in this lifetime. It helps that your assets are curiosity and adventurous spirit and it can help you create a channel of communication. But remember - it has to go both ways! You have to accept and live your lessons first, in order to teach others - and Jupiter would always wish you - Good Luck!
