What is a Spiritual Gatekeeper?
Dictionary.com defines a gatekeeper as “a person in charge of a gate, usually to identify, count, supervise, etc., the traffic or flow through it.” The gatekeeper can choose to allow us entry or deny it.
An important distinction when it comes to you being a gatekeeper yourself is to recognize that a gatekeeper protects us against time wasters and any distraction that can delay or hinder our destiny.
In essence, spiritual gatekeeping involves guarding the spiritual well-being of a community, ensuring that false teachings, harmful influences, and ungodly practices do not infiltrate the church or individual believers' lives.

Biblical Foundations of Gatekeeping
The concept of spiritual gatekeeping is evident throughout Scripture, where leaders and believers are called to be vigilant and discerning. In the Old Testament, gatekeepers were appointed to guard the entrances of the temple, ensuring that only those who were ceremonially clean could enter (1 Chronicles 9:22-27). This physical gatekeeping serves as a metaphor for the spiritual vigilance required in the New Testament church.
We still have gatekeepers today. Gatekeepers in the bible were assigned to the palace. The king had to be protected.1 Chronicles 26 highlights the roles and responsibilities of gatekeepers:
- Selection by Lot: It is interesting to note that the gatekeepers were not chosen by skill level but by lot (regardless of age, experience or maturity).
- The Sons of Korah: The sons of Korah honoured the Lord over all tradition and over their allegiance to their own family. It is interesting to also note that the sons of Korah were very well-known worship leaders.
- Merari: The Merari clan were the heavy lifters. They were strong. They knew how to war to protect the tabernacle. Like Merari, we too are called to carry the structural components of God's tabernacle as we move through life. We are living tabernacles.
- Obed-Edom: Like Obed-Edom, we too are called to allow God's holy presence to dwell among us. We are called to do all of our work IN God's presence.
In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul emphasizes the importance of guarding the faith. In his letter to Timothy, he writes, "Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you; guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us" (2 Timothy 1:14). This charge highlights the responsibility of believers to protect the integrity of the gospel message.
Roles and Responsibilities
Church Leaders as Gatekeepers
Church leaders, such as pastors, elders, and deacons, are often seen as primary spiritual gatekeepers. They are tasked with teaching sound doctrine, refuting false teachings, and shepherding the flock. Paul instructs Titus, "He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it" (Titus 1:9). This underscores the role of leaders in maintaining doctrinal purity and providing spiritual oversight.
Individual Discernment and Vigilance
All believers are called to exercise discernment and vigilance in their spiritual lives. The Apostle John warns, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). This exhortation encourages Christians to be discerning about teachings and influences they encounter.

Community Responsibility
Spiritual gatekeeping is not solely the responsibility of church leaders; it is a communal effort. The early church practiced mutual accountability, as seen in the Bereans, who "examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true" (Acts 17:11). This collective commitment to truth serves as a model for contemporary believers to engage in communal discernment and accountability.
Challenges and Considerations
Spiritual gatekeeping involves navigating challenges such as cultural pressures, theological controversies, and the rise of false teachings. Believers must balance the call to guard the faith with the command to love and engage with the world. The Apostle Peter advises, "But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you, but respond with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). This balance requires wisdom and reliance on the Holy Spirit.
The Gatekeeper Spirit Guide
For some people, the gate will stay firmly locked in this lifetime and they’ll never have any kind of psychic experience; this will happen if their soul isn’t ready for it yet and/or it’s not essential for fulfilling their purpose. Your Gatekeeper is your Spirit Guide who holds the keys to the spirit world.
Here are some key aspects of the Gatekeeper Spirit Guide:
- Psychic Assistance: They help you with your psychic work…If you’re a psychic, medium or Tarot reader, you’re probably already popping between the two worlds quite often while you’re working. They can help you to refine your gifts and will pass you direct messages once you start collaborating with them.
- Regulation of Spiritual Activity: They can also help you to live a normal life…A common theme with my clients is that they feel overwhelmed with their natural gifts. Your Gatekeeper Spirit Guide can regulate this for you so that the gate connecting you to the spirit world opens and closes when you want it to.
- Psychic Protection: Another purpose of your Gatekeeper Spirit Guide is to give you psychic protection. As your personal portal manager, they will act as your bouncer and bodyguard, only allowing in the spirits and messages which will benefit you and the people you’re serving. They will guard you as you do your psychic work and keep your connection clear, safe and high vibe.
Meeting your Gatekeeper is a similar process to meeting your regular Spirit Guides. It will probably require several attempts and will definitely require being open-minded…

- Wait for Your Gatekeeper: As you walk through the portal, you’ll still walk out into a forest of trees but on this side you are in the spirit world. Ask your Gatekeeper to show themselves and come and meet you in this enchanted forest.

The Role of Parents as Spiritual Gatekeepers
Parents serve as spiritual gatekeepers for their children, influencing the spiritual environment and experiences they encounter. What does our gates as parents look like? What enters and is allowed to exit through your gates? Not only are we the gatekeepers of our children, but also of our own personal gates. We need to be aware of what comes in through our ear gates, eye gates, mouth gates, even our nose gates (inhalation of drugs).Consider these key aspects:
- Daily Vigilance: Are you at your post daily?
- Influence on Children: You need to be a gatekeeper and spiritual warrior who are aware that if you choose to keep the gate open with anger, pornography, hate or unforgiveness - that this is what will enter - and this is what your children will have to deal with and experience.
- Personal Righteousness: I have to be the one who intercedes, who provides a safe place for my family through my life of right standing with YHVH. I have to understand that that which I ALLOW THROUGH MY GATE, IS WHAT MY CHILDREN WILL EXPERIENCE.
By understanding the purpose of gates we can redeem them for ourselves and our children to be portals of Life.
Gates are a place of:
- Worship
- Warfare
Rebuilding Walls and Gates
How do I change this? By obeying YHVH’s voice, by being open to learning about the spirit realm; and by becoming repairers of the gates in our lives, our families, and our children.
Start with the gate of a holy walk with Yeshua, so that you can start walking in your calling and no longer operate out of your mixed calling. Many people have the anointing of Cult, seen by the sinful fruit in their lives. What you sow you shall reap. Even your children’s children can still reap of your sinful seed.
But, how Retah? How do I rebuild my walls and gates?
- Take full responsibility for your sin, your arrogance, your secret sin, your self-centredness, your ignorance and comfort.
- Start to repent and break all the curses and inner vows in your gates.
- Cleanse yourself daily with YHVH’s word, with His blood and start walking in the Light!
The biggest drawback is our denial gate. It is this wide open gate that allows everything in. This gate says, it is everyone else, not me that is the cause. Stop throwing your children to the lions!
Make a choice today. Serve YHVH or serve Satan.
